HISTORY

One of the first settlers on the Peninsula was a Captain James Read who in partnership with a Mr Vokkans, took out a grazing licence and established a ‘run’ near Mt Martha naming it ‘Checkinkurk’, in 1843 Alexander Beatson Balcombe took over ‘Checkinkurk’ and changed the name of the property to ‘The Briars’ after his birthplace which was on the island of St Helena
