HISTORY When people from the small communities of Mt Eliza, Snapper Point and Mt Martha met at the Tanti Hotel in March 1856 to petition Acting-Governor Major General MacArthur for a pier and a safe harbour at Snapper Point
(renamed Mornington in 1861) the work to provide them with a jetty had already begun
Mornington’s began as a jetty and slowly transformed into a pier, a place of entertainment and a point of transfer for holiday-makers onto and off excursion steamers, and the great paddle wheelers ‘Hygiea’, ‘Ozone’
and ‘Weeroona’
The image shows passengers after they have disembarked from the 'Hygeia' at the Mornington Pier, and then perhaps making their way to the Park or the Main Street
