HISTORY A view of the Mornington Pier c1900
Mornington began as a jetty, its main purpose was for work not pleasure and serviced boats carrying cargo and passengers, but in the 1890’s cargo and passengers switched to faster modes of transport, first the railway and then to motorised transport
Slowly, the jetty transformed into a pier, a place of entertainment and a point of transfer for holiday-makers onto and off excursion steamers and the great paddle wheelers, ‘Ozone’, ‘Hygiea’ and ‘Weeroona’
The image is of a paddlesteamer docked at the Mornington Pier, smaller boats tied to the jetty
