HISTORYThe house was originally the home of Mr Thorne. It was used as a school later. The first application for a school was made in 1870 by Robert Olley and George Hutchins. No agreement could be found for a suitable site, so permission was asked to open the Osborne Common School in a brick building belonging to the Wesleyans. This was just south of the intersection of Dunns and Benton’s Roads. In July 1872 the school opened with Charles Downward as head teacher.
He received no aid from the Education Board for 6 months until he could show an enrolment of 20 pupils.
A one storey cottage built with brick with a stucco finish in white The roof is corrugated iron in a rust colour. There is a portico in the same material as the roof. There is a decoration on the front of the house in a “mock” Tudor style. The fence is made of sawn timber planks. There is one chimney visible.
