HISTORY

The Mornington Pier was built in 1857. The submission for the pier was initiated at a public meeting in the Tanti Hotel, chaired by Alex Balcombe J.P. This coincided with a survey of the harbour by R.Adams which resulted in a proposal to “give early relief to the inhabitants by providing an outlet for their produce”. The cost of the new jetty was 4000 pounds.

DESCRIPTION

This photograph shows Mornington Pier with a crowd of people boarding, and disembarking the Hygeia steam boat. It has two masts, and two funnels with smoke belching out. There are several small boats in the foreground.
