HISTORYThere is much evidence in newspaper reports and other records of the early 1900’s, that the beaches and wooded foreshores were regarded as a great asset to the community. People were allowed to cart sand from the beaches, but this practice was stopped by the 1920’s.
An indignant letter was written to the Council in 1902 by a ratepayer named Mills (Mills Beach), who said, an “an emphatic protest against any further destruction of tea tree by the Council on the frontage”. The Council replied that only dead trees had been removed to allow new ones to spring up.
This is view of Mills Beach with a person sitting in the centre looking out to sea. There is a small wooden jetty shown on the right.
