HISTORYThe Mornington Pier was built in 1857. The submission to the Ports and Harbours Commission (est 1854) was initiated at a public meeting in the Tanti Hotel, chaired by Alex Balcombe J.P. This coincided with a survey of the harbour by R. Adams which resulted in a proposal to give the local community an outlet for their produce etc., also a shelter for bay shipping during storms. The cost of the new jetty was $4000.
DESCRIPTIONThe postcard shows the steam boat Hygeia with many people aboard about to sail from Mornington Pier. There are more people on the pier watching the event. There are fishing boats in the foreground, and a man in shirt sleeves and a black hat.
