HISTORYThe roads constructed were to be used by coaches which ran from the Royal Hotel on the Esplanade to the Albion Hotel in Bourke Street, Melbourne. The coach left Mornington at 6am and arrived at the Albion Hotel by noon. The return journey began at 2pm, and reached Mornington at 6pm. It carried Her Majesty’s mail to the Peninsula. The first section of the run from Mornington, which went along the Esplanade up Main Street, along Barkly Street and Tanti Avenue was to Frankston where the horses were changed, then to Mordialloc. Here fresh horses were again available Rennison’s Hotel, Mordialloc Bridge, for the final section of the journey. During the 1860’s the Roads Board pressed on with its work of extending the paths of communication between settlements. The main road from Balcombe Creek to Dromana was proclaimed in the Victoria Government Gazette on June 16, 1861.
DESCRIPTIONThis shows the Esplanade as an unsealed road. There are power poles on either side of the road. There are some homes, lining the road, and the foreshore is heavily treed.
