HISTORY

The Mornington Pier was built in 1857. The submission to the Ports and Harbours Commission (est 1854) was initiated at a public meeting in the Tanti Hotel, chaired by Alex Balcombe J.P. This coincided with a survey of the harbour by R. Adams which resulted in a proposal to give the local community an outlet for their produce etc., also a shelter for bay shipping during storms. The cost of the new jetty was $4000. The beacon on the high ground above the Pier was lit manually and was an aid to shipping.

DESCRIPTION

This is a photograph of a drawing, showing the Pier and various sailing ships and row boats. On the Pier are lots of people, and 2 horse and drays. In the centre of the picture is a paddle steamer coming in to moor at the Pier.
