HISTORY

The Mornington Pier was built in 1857. The submission to the Ports and Harbours Commission (est 1854) was initiated at a public meeting in the Tanti Hotel, chaired by Alex Balcombe J.P. This coincided with a survey of the harbour by R. Adams which resulted in a proposal to give the local community an outlet for their produce etc., also a shelter for bay shipping during storms. The cost of the new jetty was $4000.

DESCRIPTION

This shows the Mornington Pier which appears quite bleak. There are no people in the photo, and no sign of life. There is a footpath in the foreground, and a wooden fence. There are a number of small boats moored along a wooden jetty to the right of the photograph.
