HISTORY

The Mornington Pier was built in 1857. The submission to the Ports and Harbours Commission (est 1854) was initiated at a public meeting in the Tanti Hotel, chaired by Alex Balcombe J.P. This coincided with a survey of the harbour by R. Adams which resulted in a proposal to give the local community an outlet for their produce etc., also a shelter for bay shipping during storms. The cost of the new jetty was $4000. This drawing was created in 1886.

DESCRIPTION

This a drawing of the Pier with a paddle steamer alongside. There are two yachts in the centre of the picture. There are several houses along the top of the rise above the beach.
