HISTORYDuring the summer of 1897-98 Reverend Mother Sebastian Whyte, while visiting Frankston in search of holiday house for the Sisters of the Convent of Mercy, Fitzroy, discovered that there was no Catholic school in the area. Shelbourne Park Estate, Mornington was on the market. This estate which had been the property of Caleb Jenner, was bounded by the Esplanade, Tanti Creek, Tanti Avenue and Barkly Street. It comprised of slighty more than twenty acres, and was purchased by the Sisters of Mercy for $3500. The sale became effective on April 25, 1898.
DESCRIPTIONThis shows three views of the Convent. The first shows the Convent School, which is an impressive building. It has a three storey centre section, flanked by two storey sides. It is a red brick building on the ground floor, and has been rendered cream on the top storeys. There is a red tile roof. There are eleven sash windows, and 3 chimneys visible. The front door is capped with a portico rendered cream. The second section is the Entrance Gate, which is topped with an arch with the words “College of our lady of the sea”. It is topped with a crucifix. The third section shows the Convent itself, a gorgeous building with a verandah all around, and a central tower with arched windows.
