HISTORYA decision with far reaching benefits for Mornington was the reservation of the Esplanade frontage and in particular, Victoria (Mornington) Park. On December 18, 1863 the following announcement appeared in the Victoria Government Gazette: “Schnapper Point (Mornington). “Temporarily reserved by Order 24th November 1863, site as a park for public recreation at Mornington ten acres, two roads, more or less. County of Mornington, Parish of Moorooduc”. The park was then permanently reserved for “promenade and recreation” and gazetted on May 1, 1874. The park has been truly a place of recreation throughout the past century. Picnic parties have come from the city and suburbs by horse-drawn drag, by steam boat, by steam train, by charabanc and by motor bus to the park to enjoy a day by the seaside under the spreading cypresses, trees which seem designed for easy climbing by small adventurers.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a group of people including children enjoying the park. There is a very large wooden swing structure. The men are all wearing suits, and hats, and the women are in ankle length lacy white dresses and are also wearing hats. There is a large pine tree in the background.
