HISTORYMany holiday makers travelled to Mornington and “down the Bay” by paddle steamer. The Ozone of 570 tons was part of the life of Mornington from about 1890 and the next 30 years. The arrival of the boat at the pier on Saturday and Sunday was a great event, greeted by a large crowd of townsfolk, and eagerly awaited by the drivers of waggonettes and cabs from the hotels and guest houses. These drivers wore the names of their establishments emblazoned on their caps, and there was much friendly rivalry among them for the holiday trade. Mr Ernie Smith and Mr George Parsons were two owners of horse-drawn vehicles who regularly met the boat in later years when the Hygeia and Weeroona alternated with the Ozone on excursion trips.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a large paddle steamer with two funnels, in motion. It is crowded with people in Edwardian dress. The sea is quite calm, and there is land in sight in the background.
