HISTORYThe Mornington Pier was built in 1857. The submission to the Ports and Harbours Commission (est 1854) was initiated at a public meeting in the Tanti Hotel, chaired by Alex Balcombe J.P. This coincided with a survey of the harbour by R. Adams which resulted in a proposal to give the local community an outlet for their produce etc., also a shelter for bay shipping during storms. The cost of the new jetty was $4000. The beacon on the high ground above the Pier was lit manually and was an aid to shipping.
DESCRIPTIONThis shows a roadway down to the Pier, with people making their way down to where a Paddle Steamer is moored. In the centre there is a man leaning on the fence which borders the pathway. To the left on the hill is the beacon, which was lit manually to aid safe shipping in the area.
