HISTORY

Mr Herbert Downward remembers his father speaking of corroborees being held every now and then on the cliffs above Shire Hall Beach. The beach opposite the Shire Offices had been known as Constable’s Beach, because of it’s proximity to the home of the Constable family, but the name was altered by local usage to Shire Hall Beach. This change became more significant when the Constables moved further south along the Esplanade.

DESCRIPTION

This is a sweeping view of the beach with lots of people enjoying the day. It is obviously warm, and there are a few bathers in the water. There are two row boats on the edge of the beach. There are several beach huts to the top right of the photo. The top of the embankment is mainly shrubs and trees with a few houses. The centre of the photo shows quite a few small rocks stretching into the sea.
