HISTORYMr Herbert Downward remembers his father speaking of corroborees being held every now and then on the cliffs above Shire Hall Beach. The beach opposite the Shire Offices had been known as Constable’s Beach, because of it’s proximity to the home of the Constable family, but the name was altered by local usage to Shire Hall Beach. This change became more significant when the Constables moved further south along the Esplanade.
DESCRIPTIONThis is a sweeping view of Shire Hall Beach. It shows the Boats for Hire shed on the right, with the beach and the waters of Port Philip Bay. There are about a dozen row boats shown in the picture, most of these are on the beach in front of the shed, only one is shown in the water. There are a few people on the beach. In the distance along the beach, a glimpse of the bathing huts can be seen. The top of the embankment is quite heavily covered in trees and shrubs, there are no houses to be seen. On the roof of the boat shed it has a sign: Boats for Hire, S. Garlick, Line & Bait provided.
