HISTORY

Canadian Bay Beach is the beach where the film “The Beach” was filmed, with Gregory Peck, and Ava Gardner. It was reported that Ava said it was an appropriate place to film the end of the world. This comment has since been disproved. Except for the occasional sealer the Mornington Peninsula remained undisturbed by the white man until the 1830’s. Before that time a few events took place which indicated change was about to happen. In 1824 a thin link with Sydney was formed when Hume and Hovell travelled overland from Lake George and reached Corio Bay. Two years later the fear of the French flared causing Governor Darling to despatch Captain Wright with convicts and marines to take formal possession and establish a settlement at Westernport. He landed near Rhyll on Phillip Island, but later moved his establishment to Settlement Point, near Corinella. Within a year the enterprise was abandoned and little trace of the settlement now remains. Included in Wright’s party was Captain Hovell, who had made the journey to Port Phillip with Hume two years previously. During the time Hovell was at the Western Port settlement he made several short exploratory trips. On one of these journeys he reached the ridges that lead up to Mount Eliza, and from there he went down to the coast of Port Phillip somewhere near Frankston. Hovell was the first white man to cross the Peninsula in this direction. Canadian Bay Beach, Mt Eliza,
