HISTORYFoxey’s Hangout is the name given to a large gum tree which stood at the corner of Balnarring and TubbaRubba Roads. Two trappers (Jack Johnson and Lou Connell) were in friendly competition over the number of foxes each trapped annually. Garry Downward, son of Herbert Downward, kept the tally of foxes. Jack worked as handyman and trapper of foxes and rabbits for Herbert Downward. The corner remains a local landmark and historic site even though the tree has died.
Photograph of twin tree trunk on road verge with unsurfaced road on the left. Three rather primitive signs are attached, one to each trunk and a third at the common base. The bodies of two foxes hang from a branch on the right from the trunk bearing a hand printed sign saying”Watch this tree for Jack Johnson’s 1944 catch”. The sign at the base says “Foxey’s Hangout Pride of TubbaRubba”. The sign on the left is illegible.
