HISTORYHerbert Edward Graham Downward was the eldest child of Alfred and Josephine Downward of ‘Redwood’ Mornington, born on 1 April 1879. He lived at his father’s house in Mornington and was educated locally at the Mornington State School in Vale Street. His father was a Councillor in two Mornington Peninsula Shires and later the M.L.A for Mornington. Herbert succeeded his father in these positions and became Cr. Shire of Flinders 1915-1920, Cr. Shire of Mornington 1919-1930 and M.L.A. for Mornington 1929-1932. He was active in horse racing Clubs and was a Committee Member of the Mornington Racing Club and its Secretary 1909 - 1930 and made a Life Member in 1951. He was also a Committee Member,later Life Member, of the Pakenham R.C. 1926 - 1954. Herbert married Eileen Edwards, daughter of the Dromana policeman, in 1916. They lived at Glengala where Herbert farmed and had a ‘town house’ in Queen Street Mornington called ‘Darriman’. They had 3 sons, Graham (Garry), Richard (Dick) and Harry. Herbert died at Frankston in 1973.
