HISTORY

Land in Vale Street, Mornington was purchased for a school in 1874. The first building was constructed by William Baynes of Dromana and the school opened in February 1878 with about 80 school children. This school replaced the Common School House on the corner of Main Street and Ross Street which was in adequate in size and dilapidated. Emma Downward, sister of Alfred, was a pupil at the Common School in 1857 and an assistant teaher in 1876 before the move to the new school.

DESCRIPTION

A free standing, single storied brick building on generous sized land. There are at least three rooms off set behind one other. All have steeply pitched roofs. The style is typical of turn-of-the-century school buildings. Two trees stand to the left and there are six children grouped in the front of the building
