HISTORYThe Mornington State School in Vale Street was built in the 1870s and opened in February 1878 as State School number 2033 with some 80 pupils. The numbers increased and the school became overcrowded by the mid 1980s. Additions were made to the original schoolroom in 1908.
DESCRIPTIONA brick school building in turn-of-the-century-style, photographed from the front. There are three rooms set behind one another and the roof of another room is just visible behind. The tiled roofs are high pitched and there are two chimneys visible. A flagpole stands in the featureless school grounds. Five or six school children are playing in two groups. A post and rail fence, with two strands of wire between the posts, defines the playground in front of the school.
