HISTORYThe convent was established in Tanti Avenue on the Shelbourne Park Estate purchased in 1898 by the Sisters of Mercy. The original purpose was to build Catholic schools for the area within St. Macartans Parish and a holiday house for the Fitzroy Sisters of Mercy. A primary school and a college for girls were established and received day pupils and boarders who were accommodated in the Convent which provided Catholic education for many years. As the needs changed over the years the Convent was eventually sold for development of apartments although the facade was maintained.
DESCRIPTIONThis is a two story building of part red brick and part white render. There is a substantial portico with steps in front and on the left side leading up to the white portico which has a set of four windows above the doorway. Brick steps appear to lead further up to the brick portion. There is an extension of the white surface to the right with CONVENT OF MERCY on the upper facade. Behind the portico the left wing extends as a balconied two story structure. There is a circular driveway in front with several small trees and a small open fronted shelter is on the left.
