HISTORYThe convent was established in Tanti Avenue on the Shelbourne Park Estate purchased in 1898 by the Sisters of Mercy. The original purpose was to build Catholic schools for the area within St. Macartans Parish and a holiday house for the Fitzroy Sisters of Mercy. A primary school and a college for girls were established and received day pupils and boarders who were accommodated in the Convent which provided Catholic education for many years. As the needs changed over the years the Convent was eventually sold for development of apartments although the facade was maintained.
DESCRIPTIONThis is a view of a different part of the facade of the Convent of Mercy to that in item 1294. Here the centre piece is a three story tower of red brick with white rendering with a flight of steps leading to a green door and set just in front of the two wings of a three story building. A substantial eucalypt tree stands in a small lawn at the front of the building.
