HISTORYThe house was built in 1878 as the residence of Thomas Cogger Allchin, his wife and family. He was, among many occupations, builder, timber merchant, and brickmaker. In fact the bricks for Sutton Grange were made in Allchin’s brickworks. He lived there until his death in 1901. Hiswife died in 1918 after which the land was subdivided and used progressively as a guest house, a Government children’s home, a function centre and finally it was absorbed into a residential development.
DESCRIPTIONThis is a photograph of a distinguished two story brick house with a three story tower against the front wall. Iron lace frames a verandah on either side of the tower which has a lookout balcony on its third story. The house is set in a formal garden with a lawn and low hedges. There is an entrance in the side wall as well as the front entrance through the ground floor of the tower. Tall windows are framed in decorative tuck pointed brick.
