REG NO.1314.2
HISTORYThe memorial was originally erected in 1925 outside the council chambers at the corner of Main and Queen Streets in Elliott Square, so named after General ‘Pompy’ Elliott. The names are of the one hundred and seventeen men and four women who were associated with Mornington and served in the First World War. The Memorial was moved in 1998, as an initiative of the RSL Heritage Committee, member Bill Coventry being a prime instigator. Cranbourne Light Horse provided the escort. The plan was to develop Memorial Park as an appropriate site for memorial services and memorials.
DESCRIPTIONThree mounted horsemen, each wearing army uniform and slouch hats with feathers. Behind them is the truck bearing the Honour Roll they are about to escort from Elliott Square outside the Mechanics Institute and Council Chambers to Memorial Park, Mornington. St. Peter’s Anglican Church and Queen Street is in the Left background. The men are wearing numerous medals on their uniforms. One horseman is bearing a standard with the Australian flag. Two of the horses’ noses have white blazes.
