HISTORY

This man was a member of a group of former US Marines who were at Balcombe Army Camp during World War 2. They were there for rest and recreation after a major battle in the Pacific. They were grateful to the local citizens who provided hospitality to them. In 2001 some returned to Mornington for a reunion. It is most likely that this was connected with the ceremony for the Balcombe Camp Memorial gates. (see Images under 1313.) Balcombe Army Camp,

DESCRIPTION

A bespectacled, smiling man of about 70 years is standing in front of a brick wall. He is dressed casually in a red, blue and white striped shirt with short sleeves and an open neck with a peaked cap in the same colours. There is a diamond shaped badge in front with white stars in the shape of the Southern Cross on a blue background. A badge is pinned to his shirt pocket and there is a camera hanging from a cord around his neck. He appears to hold a walking stick in his left hand.
