HISTORYThis man was a member of a group of former US Marines who were at Balcombe Army Camp during World War 2. They were there for rest and recreation after a major battle in the Pacific. They were grateful to the local citizens who provided hospitality to them. In 2001 some returned to Mornington for a reunion. It is most likely that this was connected with the ceremony for the Balcombe Camp Memorial gates. (see Images under 1313.) Balcombe Army Camp,
DESCRIPTIONA bespectacled, smiling man of about 70 years is standing in front of a brick wall. He is dressed casually in a red, blue and white striped shirt with short sleeves and an open neck with a peaked cap in the same colours. There is a diamond shaped badge in front with white stars in the shape of the Southern Cross on a blue background. A badge is pinned to his shirt pocket and there is a camera hanging from a cord around his neck. He appears to hold a walking stick in his left hand.
