HISTORY

Horses were very important to the development of Mornington. The roads had been constructed to be used by coaches, which ran from The Royal Hotel on the Esplanade, Mornington to the Albion Hotel in Bourke Street, Melbourne. Coaches, with passengers and parcels left the Albion Depot regularly for most country centres. The first section of the run from Mornington, which went along the Esplanade, up Main Street, along Barkly Street, and Tanti Avenue, was to Frankston, where the horses were changed then to Mordialloc. Here fresh horses were again available at Rennisons’s Hotel, Mordialloc Bridge , for the final section of the journey. Teams generally were six in hand, although sometimes larger or smaller teams were used.
