HISTORYBy 1862 two English sisters Dorothea Stamp and her sister Anna Ashton were proprietors of a small school for the children of the town, among their pupils were Elsie & Lily Garlick (pictured), Emmie Allchin and "Gib" Barrett.
The school was in Barkly Street down towards the beach end on the right hand side, the large Norfolk Pine that is still growing there was the site of the school. Dorothea Stamp and her sister Anna were also organists at the Presbyterian Church.
This photograph shows a white one storey building, with a pitched roof. The rear section of the building is weather board, but the front porch appears to be rendered. There is a white picket fence at the front with a gate way. There are two tall trees either side of the gate on the inside. In front of the fence there is a woman and two small girls. The woman teacher is on the left, and is wearing a dark long dress. The two pupils are wearing dark dresses with white pinafores over them. They have dark stockings and shoes.
