HISTORY

The original State Savings Bank was on the Esplanade next to the Old Post Office. The Manager of the original bank was Mr Pennefather from 1923-1924 and again in 1928-1929. Nigel Evans of N.S.L Egan & Co. a public accountant started Beach Acceptance, a hire purchase company which brought new found credit facilities to the town. Later he bought the old State Savings building, which was occupied by the Criminal Investigation Bureau after that. The State Bank in the photo was built in 1952 on land reputed to have cost twenty-eight pounds per lineal foot. The premises is being rebuilt over the whole site in 1979. Beside the Bank was a Milk Bar, bought in the 1950’s by George and Val Allsop, aided by their capable little daughter whom everybody loved.
