HISTORY

The Mornington State School in Vale Street was built in the 1870s and opened in February 1878 as State School number 2033 with some 80 pupils. The numbers increased and the school became overcrowded by the mid 1980s. Additions were made to the original schoolroom in 1908.

DESCRIPTION

This photo shows 56 pupils and 2 teachers, one on either side. There are in 4 graduated rows, with the children in the front row cross legged. The little boy in the centre front is holding a sign “Mornington School 2033 Dec. 1938, Grades 1 & 2.
