HISTORYMr S.L. Butler was a prominent member of the R.S.L. One of the major concerns of the Mornington sub-branch was the raising of a war memorial to those servicemen who had not returned from war. He was also a trustee of the Bush Hospital, and was appointed as Honorary Secretary. The efforts of the Hospital Committee and its supporters reached fruition when the building was dedicated and opened on July 18, 1937. When the Joint Transport Research Committee sat in the Mornington Court House to investigate the railway situation in February 1954 it heart evidence from a wide variety of people representing the Shire, business interests and a number of organizations. Sole opposition to restore the passenger railway service was voiced by S.L.Butler who claimed that 70 per cent of the population owned their own transport, or made use of other people’s. Of the remaining 30 per cent, not more than 10 per cent travel to Melbourne regularly.
