HISTORY

This family lived next door to Osborne Cottage (Old Osborne School), and were on the committee of the school. Bill Smith bought land at Tubba Rubba then moved to Dunns Road. The first application for govrnment aid to establish a school at Green Island (Osborne) was made in 1870 by Robert Olley and George Hutchins. In 1872 A.B.Balcombe wrote from the Briars of a meeting held at Green Island to initiate a Common School. Permission was asked to open the Osborne Common School in a brick building belonging to the Wesleyans. It was just south of the intersection of Dunns and Bentons Road on half an acre of unfenced land. Here in July 1872, with Charles Downward as Head Teacher, the school opened.
