HISTORY

The first World War ended in 1918. Australia was stunned by the outbreak of war in August 1914. There was no immediacy about overseas news for the average person before the days of radio and television. Quarrels in Europe happened far away and were of little concern to Australians, secure in their remoteness and in the invincible protection of the British Navy. The only naval power which could pose any threat in the Pacific was Japan, and that country was bound to Britain by a defence treaty.
