HISTORY

Sir John Franklin was born in Spilsby, United Kingdom on April 16, 1786. His spouse was Jane Franklin (m1828-1847). He was a Rear Admiral in the British Royal Navy. He was lost on an expedition in the Arctic of the North West Passage. There are statues of him in London and Tasmania. One of 6 midshipmen on the Investigator. Franklin also served as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s land (Now Tasmania) from 1837 to 1843. His mother’s sister (his aunt) became Flinder’s step mother when Flinders was 11 years old. Midshipman John was with Flinders on the climb up Arthur’s Seat. In 1843 while Governor of Tasmania he re-visited this spot.

DESCRIPTION

This shows a gentleman in uniform. He has medals on his chest, and epaulettes on his shoulders. He has a very high forehead, and black hair with side whiskers.
