HISTORYThis was part of a “Learn to Swim Campaign” run by the Herald newspaper. The Mornington State School in Vale Street was built in the 1870s and opened in February 1878 as State School number 2033 with some 80 pupils. The numbers increased and the school became overcrowded by the mid 1980s. Additions were made to the original schoolroom in 1908. Vale Street, Mornington Primary School, Mornington.
DESCRIPTIONThis image shows a group of children ranged in four tiers, each is holding a certificate in front of them. There are two men presumably teachers in the group. In the foreground is a gentleman presenting a certificate to a young girl. He has white hair, and a dark suit, and she is wearing a school dress and blazer. They are both smiling. There is a flag pole behind the children.
