The foot bridge replaced an earlier one opposite Palm Beach Grove which was damaged by floods. General Sam Savage invited the Third Divisional Engineers to do this construction.
The first bridge was built in 1935 as a narrow suspension bridge which was in use until 1947 and removed in 1949.
